The Minister of Justice, Simon Jolin-Barrette, was shocked by a decision of the Court of Quebec granting a conditional discharge to a sexual aggressor.
The Minister commented on Wednesday on the sentence adopted by the court, which the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions will challenge (DPCP).
“I was deeply shocked by the sentencing decision that was handed down,” he said ahead of a cabinet meeting. The DPCP, with whom I spoke, has decided to appeal the decision and the Court of Appeal will be able to rule on this judgment. »
Mr. Jolin-Barrette insisted on the importance of restoring the confidence of victims of sexual assault in the judicial system.
“I stand in solidarity with the victims and I tell them that we are transforming the justice system, we are modernizing it, adapting it and placing the victims at the center of the judicial process,” said added the Minister. A pilot project for courts specializing in matters of sexual and domestic violence is also underway in six judicial districts in Quebec.
