No more choice, we’ll have to take it easy on the accelerator pedal. As of this Wednesday, July 6, AIV, for Intelligent Speed Adaptation, becomes mandatory for all new car models.
A speeding warning device
This new system constantly detects, via the GPS and the vehicle’s on-board camera, which reads the traffic signs on which axis you are driving and the authorized speed.
If you exceed the limit, you are alerted immediately by an audible or visual signal. If you don’t slow down, the AIV will initiate a speed clamping device. The accelerator pedal will become harder and start to vibrate, forcing the driver to press harder if they wish to ignore the warnings.
A target of 20% fewer deaths on the roads
According to the ETSC, an association of road and transport experts based in Brussels, the AIV can reduce accidents by 30% and the number of road deaths by 20% of the European Union. But if the European regulation makes this system compulsory for all new models, the driver will always be able to keep control of the speed of his vehicle, simply by deactivating the AIV.
