In Ardèche, the risk of fire is great during the summer seasons. To alert the emergency services more quickly, two students watch from the top of the lookouts present in the region.

Being high up to warn of the arrival of the flames is the task that two students carry out daily during the summer season, in Ardèche. Built several hundred years ago, these lookouts have found a second life and they are used today to alert the emergency services in the event of the outbreak of flames. The two students are equipped with binoculars and a walkie-talkie to monitor the surroundings. Before being able to perform this taskMatthias and Katlyne were subjected to two days of training.

Perched at the top of their watchtower, Katlyne and Matthias have a great responsibility since by monitoring the surroundings, 36 villages are subject to their informed eyes. It’s a constant job since the two students live in this tower for the duration of their mission. “It’s a bit rudimentary, a bit new experience”, smiles Matthias. Firefighters are relieved to have spotters on site.
