“Europe is at war”. This is what Angelique Bouin feels from February 24, 2022, the day of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The radio journalist based in Brussels had already experienced the total mobilization of the European institutions in the fight against the Covid epidemic, but with this high-intensity conflict which begins on European soil, the stakes are much higher.
It was at this time, moreover, that one of his “sources” in Brussels confessed to him: “we are afraid”. The construction of Europe, which was built on peace, is all of a sudden in danger of collapsing. The reaction of the European Union is to unite, because according to Angélique Bouin, “it had no other choice anyway”.
The Radio France correspondent believes that European news is so dense that it is difficult to cover it, especially since the French media only have around thirty permanent correspondents in Brussels. This is much less than the German media for example or than most European media.
But the trend is slightly reversed: the newspaper Le Monde will soon appoint a third European correspondent.
“At the info counter” is the first native (audio) podcast of France Télévisions. In the form of a journalistic interview, an actor who produces public service television news — a major reporter, a cameraman, a presenter — comes to give himself up, tell, reveal the way he works. In a sound atmosphere of a coffee counter, he confides his doubts, his joys, but also his fears when he is on the ground or in the studio. Since May 2021, the podcast “At the info counter” has also received journalists from Radio France (France Inter, France Info, France Culture) at its microphone.
The series is produced by François Beaudonnet, editor-in-chief Europe, columnist for franceinfo (channel 27), senior reporter for France 2 and columnist for the program “Nous, les Européens” on France 3. Former correspondent in Rome and Brussels, he started on the radio where he presented the 1 p.m. news on France Inter.
