A landslide at a railway construction camp in northeast India has left at least 20 people dead and more than 40 missing, the army said Friday (July 1st).

The landslide took place Thursday, June 30 in the state of Manipur, hit by heavy rainfall in recent weeks. Most of the victims were Territorial Force reserve soldiers working on a railroad project. Some 18 people were recovered safe and sound, according to the army, and rescuers were still trying to find the 15 reservists and 29 civilians still missing.

Earlier this year, at least ten people died in such natural disasters following unusually heavy rains in several parts of India. Extreme weather phenomena favored by global warming, according to experts, and by deforestation or dams built in the country.
