The mother-in-law of the Granby girl begins her testimony Monday morning. The 38-year-old is charged with second degree murder and forcible confinement of the seven-year-old.
For five weeks, Crown prosecutors have been trying to prove that the accused wrapped the victim in duct tape. Twenty-one witnesses have been heard so far.
The child was found naked and lifeless in her room on April 29, 2019. Police officer Martin Noël and paramedic Kariane Royer, the first to arrive on the scene, said they were struck by the child’s thinness and by the arrangement of furniture in the room. These were stacked in front of the bedroom windows.
The son of the accused also recounted that the girl tried to escape from her home four times in the hours before her death. At around 1:30 a.m., on the night of April 28 to 29, 2019, she rang the bell on a neighbor’s door. When Richard Samson answered, an adult was already accompanying the girl to her home.
The Crown finished presenting its evidence last week. The accused’s lawyers in turn began their defense.
