As the fire continues to progress in the Pyrénées-Orientales, nearly 1,100 hectares have already burned. Firefighters were still fighting Wednesday, June 29 to protect homes.
Firefighters fought all afternoon against dozens of resumptions of flamess, which gave them no respite. In the air, the planes work on the assembly line and pour out liters of water. Their absolute mission is to preserve threatened dwellings. On the ground, you have to move quickly because the slightest smoke can turn into flames. “We wet as much as possible to extinguish the underground embers”explains a firefighter.
300 meters away, a couple watches helplessly their house which they have just evacuated urgently for the second time in 24 hours. “A firefighter came running and shouted to me ‘we must evacuate now, immediately’, so I left without my shoes, taking the minimum”, says the woman. No homes were damaged, but in terms of vegetation, 1,100 hectares went up in smoke. The fire is still progressing slowly but firefighters hope to bring it under control overnight.
