While the housing crisis is in full swing and 37,000 households are waiting for social housing, the Legault government announced on Wednesday the construction of 1,723 affordable housing units, starting this fall for some of them.

The announcement of the construction of these units bears witness to the success of the first call for projects under the Quebec Affordable Housing Program (PHAQ), said the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Andrée Laforest, who hopes that this will help to dissipate doubts about this new program.
“The results of the first call for projects clearly show that we got it right by creating the Quebec Affordable Housing Program (…). The skeptics were confounded!” said the minister in a press release.
However, the construction of such housing takes about three to five years, which means that in the short term, the housing crisis is not solved.
We should also remember that the construction of 6,000 affordable housing units is currently blocked in Montreal due to administrative problems.
In addition to investing $300 million in the PHAQ, the government also injected $247 million more into AccèsLogis Québec in the last budget, in order to promote the creation of affordable and social housing.
