BEI investigation into a fatal altercation involving a Longueuil police officer

The Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) is called upon to look into the circumstances of an intervention involving the Longueuil agglomeration police service (SPAL) late Sunday evening, which left one dead.

According to preliminary information sent to the BEI, around 11:35 p.m., two men armed with sticks clashed in the parking lot of a commercial establishment located on boulevard Cousineau, in Longueuil.

The first SPAL policeman to arrive on the scene reportedly located a man with a stick in his possession. The latter would then have tried to attack the policeman and a physical altercation would have broken out.

During the altercation, the 41-year-old man reportedly lost consciousness. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The BEI reports on Monday that he subsequently lost his life.

Five BEI investigators were tasked with investigating the circumstances of the event. A parallel investigation will be carried out by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), which will also act as a support police service.
