The decision of certain American states to abolish the right to abortion, Friday, June 24, caused a reaction in France. Several politicians are calling for this right to be included in the Constitution.

Saturday, June 25, the pride march defended the freedom to resort to abortion, a right that many believe is threatened, after the decision of the American Supreme Court. “It scares us very, very much. And so, that means we have to stay mobilized”, commented a protester. The decision of certain American states, which took the day before the decision to ban abortions, was widely condemned in France. Elisabeth Badinter, figure of feminism, shared her “feeling of despair”. “If the country that seems to be at the head of Western democracies does that, we are in great danger”she adds.

As of Friday, June 2, the NUPES announced that it wanted to table a bill in order to include the right to abortion in the French Constitution. “So that we can no longer go back on this essential conquest of women’s rights”, explains Mathilde Panot, Member of the National Assembly. La France insoumise had already made the proposal in 2019, but it had been rejected by the Republic on the move. On the morning of June 25, the majority decided to enshrine in the Constitution the impossibility of depriving a person of the right to abortion. It will take 3/5 of the deputies and senators, meeting in congress, to engrave the law in the Constitution.
