Since the early hours of Friday morning, Montreal metro users have been able to board trains for free if they access them from certain downtown stations on weekends.
Thus, every weekend and public holiday until September 5, the metro will be free for people who enter Peel, McGill, Place-des-arts and Saint-Laurent stations, on the green line, at Champ-de -Mars and Place-d’Armes, on the orange line, and at the Berri-UQAM station, where the yellow, orange and green lines intersect.
However, users are warned that free access only affects these seven stations and that access remains chargeable in the others. The offer also does not apply to the bus network, where a valid transport ticket is still required.
This measure was announced last week by the City of Montreal, in partnership with the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM) and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).
In return, free parking in the city center has not been renewed for weekends this summer. “The best way to get around downtown is by public transit,” Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said on Twitter Friday morning.
