The European Parliament voted Wednesday, June 22 the creation of a carbon tax at the borders of Europe. In duplexthe franceinfo correspondent in Brussels, Pascal Verdeau, reveals the new constraints soon to be imposed on the biggest polluters.
This carbon tax will notably affect imports such as steel or cement from third countries such as Turkey or India. These high-carbon products will thus be taxed when they enter European soil. “In return, European industrialists who benefited from the right to pollute free will be subject to the polluter-pays principle. And these free quotas will gradually disappear “analyzes Pascal Verdeau.
The carbon market will also be extended to the air and maritime sector. Another measure is the creation of a social climate fund with 72 billion euros in aid for the poorest households. As Pascal Verdeau points out, parliament still has to convince reluctant countries like Germany, which is strongly opposed to the redistribution of this money at European level.
