A few days before the holidays, a race against the clock starts for some French people, who wish to renew their identity papers. A real challenge in some departments, where delays are counted in months. Temporary reception centers have been opened to speed up the process.

In Saône (Doubs), a woman wishing to renew her identity papers was finally able to get an appointment in a reception center, Wednesday June 22. This is the end of an administrative galley. “My ID card expires at the end of June and my daughter in August. I wanted us to be able to renew, I didn’t think it was going to take so long”, confides the mother of the family. In the room, a dozen reception desks have been installed, entirely dedicated to identity papers.

The center opened a week ago, enough to relieve a hundred people a day. “The slots we saw in Besançon were at the end of August”, says a man, who got a last-minute slot. In France, 30 emergency centers like that of Saône have opened, in Lyon (Rhône), Paris or Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). In Saône, the State has financed the recruitment of a dozen agents, who are retired, job seekers or students.
