The rise in the number of cyclists killed on the road is reigniting the debate on compulsory helmets for adults.

It is a macabre record. Last year, 226 people died on bicycles. A figure unheard of for 20 years. Last May, cyclist mortality jumped 21% compared to 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic. So how do you secure two-wheelers? For users met in Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), the helmet is essential. “I have already been knocked down by bike, since then I systematically put on the helmet”says a cyclist.

However, some tend to forget it. “It’s not a constraint, it’s a security (…). But like many people, as long as it’s not compulsory, we don’t put it”, slips a resident of Rennes. In a shop in the city, the sellers do not even have to offer: customers equip themselves and buy helmets, indicators or even body airbags. These detect the fall of the cyclist before opening. But what about amenities? Rennes is a good student and is one of the best equipped cities. But for Sébastien His, president of Roazhon Mobility, users are not educated enough in the use of equipment.
