Bruins hold back Devils’ momentum

Brad Marchand scored two goals and goaltender Jeremy Swayman blocked 27 pucks to lead the Boston Bruins to a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday afternoon.

Erik Haula, Patrice Bergeron and Jake DeBrusk also found the back of the net for the Bruins, who stopped two streaks, three wins for the Devils and another three losses from them, away from home.

Defenseman Charlie McAvoy did his part by collecting three assists that helped Swayman secure a third straight win.

Rookie Dawson Mercer and Jesper Bratt had one goal and one assist each for the Devils. Andreas Johnsson, their line-mate, registered two assists.

The Bruins never pulled back from when Haula hit the target at 5:37 of the first period.

Marchand doubled the Bruins’ lead early in the second period, but Mercer responded 28 seconds later.

Marchand completed his brace just over two minutes later when he beat the vigilance of Bernier, who stopped 31 shots.

Senators beat the Penguins 6-3

Drake Batherson had two goals and two assists as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 on Saturday night.

Zach Sanford, Michael Del Zotto, Parker Kelly and Tim Stutzle also hit the mark for the Senators, who ended a four-game losing streak.

Young defensemen Jacob Bernard-Docker and Lassi Thomson took advantage of their team’s victory to secure their first career point in the NHL.

Del Zotto amassed an assist as Thomas Chabot had two for the Senators, who saw Filip Gustavsson turn off 28 pucks.

Kasperi Kapanen and Evan Rodrigues, twice, sparked the red light for the Penguins, who allowed the game’s first five goals.

Casey DeSmith started the game for Pittsburgh and stopped 18 of 23 shots aimed at him.

The Jets win 3-2 against the Kings

Mark Scheifele ended his famine by hitting the target in the 32e second in overtime, leading the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

Nikolaj Ehlers set the table for Scheifele’s first goal of the campaign.

The Kings’ overtime loss ended their winning streak seven. The Los Angeles troupe had also won their last three outings abroad.

Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck blocked 27 of 29 shots aimed at him. His team have improved their record to 8-3-3 this season.

Cal Petersen turned 20 of 23 pucks into the Kings net.

Kyle Connor and Dylan DeMelo moved the ropes for the Alberta team. Carl Gundstrom and Brendan Lemieux replied for the Kings.

Lightning beat Panthers in overtime

Brayden Point put the needle in overtime with a backhand shot and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Saturday night.

Behind his net, Ondrej Palat threw Point in breakaway and the attacker served a nice backhand feint to Sergei Bobrovsky to deceive his vigilance.

Pat Maroon and Victor Hedman also found the back of the net for the Lightning, who haven’t lost in regulation in their last seven outings (5-0-2).

Andrei Vasilevskiy had the best of his compatriot by making 26 saves in front of the Lightning cage.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Eetu Luostarinen scored for the Panthers, who haven’t won in their last four games after starting the campaign with a 10-0-1 record.

Bobrovsky concluded the clash with 21 saves. In overtime, he closed the door on Hedman during a breakaway before allowing the goal to Point.

The Blue Jackets beaten 5-3 by the Rangers

Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider both scored twice and the New York Rangers won 5-3 over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

Jacob Trouba amassed a goal and an assist as Ryan Strome and Adam Fox both assisted in two goals for the Rangers, who registered a second straight victory.

Igor Shesterkin stopped 31 shots for Rangers, but left the game in the third period after colliding with Vladislav Gavrikov. In relief, Alexandar Georgiev was perfect in front of two throws.

Jakub Voracek, Eric Robinson and Alexandre Texier provided the answer for the Blue Jackets, who suffered a second straight loss at home. Elvis Merzilikins made 36 saves.

Robinson gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead in the second period, but his team’s lead didn’t last long.

Kreider, Panarin and Trouba took turns moving the strings in an interval of 63 seconds for the New Yorkers, who increased their lead to 5-2 at the start of the third period.

Maple Leafs defeat Sabers 5-4

Morgan Rielly broke the deadlock with only 12 seconds remaining and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buffalo Sabers 5-4 on Saturday night.

Joseph Woll stopped 23 shots in his NHL debut and the Maple Leafs have won for the eighth time in their last nine outings. They are 10-5-1 after starting the season with a 2-4-1 record.

John Tavares, Ondrej Kase, Michael Bunting and David Kampf also put the needle on for the Torontonians, who did not shoot from behind in the game.

The Sabers erased a two-goal delay when Jeff Skinner and Rasmus Dahlin hit the target within 59 seconds, halfway through the third period.

The Buffalo side were unable to force an overtime, as they were stuck in their own turf in the final two minutes of the clash. Rielly fired a wrist shot that went through traffic and moved the ropes.

Skinner finished the game with two goals and an assist while Tage Thompson added a goal in the loss. Aaron Dell blocked 21 pucks in his debut for the Sabers.

Hurricanes beat Blues 3-2

Brendan Smith scored his first goal of the campaign late in the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-2 on Saturday night.

Smith fired a shot from the left point and the puck slipped past young goaltender Joel Hofer with only 2:57 left in the game.

Brady Skjei and Sebastian Aho also hit the mark for the Hurricanes, who avoided losing a second straight game.

Andrei Svechnikov and Tony DeAngelo got two assists each. Alex Lyon made 27 saves on his debut for the Hurricanes.

Pavel Buchnevich and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for the Blues. In his second game in the NHL, Hofer blocked 21 pucks.

The Blues tied it 2-2 when Tarasenko jumped on his own throw-back to beat Lyon in the 48th second of the third period.

The Stars win 5-2 against the Flyers

Roope Hintz amassed a goal and an assist and the Dallas Stars beat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 on Saturday night.

Hintz hit the target for a second straight game, after scoring zero in the first 11 games of the campaign. He prepared for Joe Pavelski’s power-play goal in the third period.

The Stars scored their first regulation-time victory this season and found the back of the net on the power play for a sixth straight game.

Luke Glendening had one goal and one assist as Tyler Seguin and Radek Faksa each added a goal for the Stars. Anton Khudobin made 31 saves.

James Van Riemsdyk and Ivan Provorov were the scorers for the Flyers, who have alternated wins and losses for eight games.

Martin Jones turned away 25 of 29 pucks aimed at him and suffered a first loss this season, after winning his first three starts.

Coyotes suffer another setback

Roman Josi had two goals and two assists and the Nashville Predators beat the poor Arizona Coyotes 4-1 on Saturday night.

Matt Duchene and Mikael Granlund also blackened the scoresheet for the Predators, who have won their last three games and four of their last five.

Eeli Tolvanen contributed offensively by collecting two assists. Juuse Saros stopped 22 shots for the Tennessee roster.

Jakob Chychrun was the only Coyotes player to flicker the red light. Karel Vejmelka made 19 saves.

The Coyotes have won only one of their 15 games this season (1-13-1) and have suffered loss in their last three games.

Duchene opened the scoring at 11:14 of the first twenty. He scored his ninth goal of the campaign by beating Vejmelka at the stick. Josi took advantage of a power play to score the eventual winning goal, with 1:48 remaining in the period.

The Sharks beaten 6-2 by the Avalanche

The Avalanche got over a slow start and the Colorado team crushed the San Jose Sharks 6-2 on Saturday night.

Samuel Girard led the charge with one goal and three assists. This is the second career four-point game for the Quebecer and his first since January 2, 2020.

Nazem Kadri had a goal and an assist for the Avalanche, who outscored their last two opponents 13-3 in goals. Alex Newhook, meanwhile, scored his first career NHL goal of the season.

Devon Toews, Logan O’Connor and Andre Burakovsky completed the score for the Avalanche. Darcy Kuemper blocked 28 pucks.

Logan Couture and Alexander Barabanov replied for the Sharks, who saw Adin Hill make 25 saves.

The Sharks have reunited with their head coach Bob Boughner and seven players. The latter had to submit to the COVID-19 protocols of the NHL. Boughner had not coached a game since October 28.
