Arriving on the Rock in 1297, the Grimaldis took nearly two centuries to assert their authority over the site at the expense of Genoa. To do this, they made alliances with the King of France and the House of Savoy. The Grimaldis extended the area of Monaco which, until 1848, included Menton and Roquebrune Cap Martin.
With the arrival of the railway on the Côte d’Azur in the second half of the 19th century, the Grimaldis focused the development of Monaco on residential real estate, gambling and tourism.
The Principality is one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Blue Coast.
