European Union: Ukraine is officially a candidate

Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, supported Ukraine’s candidate to enter the European Union on Friday June 17. The day after the visit to kyiv (Ukraine) of the French, German and Italian leaders, it is a new approval for President Volodymyr Zelensky. The next step is crucial. On June 23 and 24, the European summit will be held where the 27 Member States will have to vote unanimously. However, some countries, such as the Netherlands, have expressed reservations.

Vladimir Putin’s reaction is also highly anticipated. Officially, Russia is not hostile to Ukraine’s move. “We have nothing against that, it is a sovereign decision of each country”said the Russian president. “In my opinion, Ukraine will become a kind of half-colony of Europe if it does not protect its internal market”, he however launched. Passed a little unnoticed, Moldova also obtained EU candidate status on Friday.
