With a video posted on her Twitter account, Thursday June 16, 2022, the NUPES candidate for the legislative elections in Seine-Saint-Denis Raquel Garrido explains that she was, with two activists, victims of tear gas launched by an individual in Drancy.
The candidate and two other people were campaigning in a car with a megaphone. The video shows a young man approaching the vehicle with a can of gas in his hand and spraying the contents at close range into the passenger compartment. “We were taken in for care“, writes Raquel Garrido, who announces his intention to file a complaint.
According to her, “two Jean-Christophe Lagarde activists asked this individual to gas my car“. Contacted by France Bleu Paris, Jean-Christophe Lagarde, opponent in the second round in this 5th constituency of Raquel Garrido, completely refutes the involvement of his supporters. “One of his supporters [à Raquel Garrido] got into a fight with young people from the neighboring town and it was one of these kids, no more than 13 or 14, who threw tear gas. Nothing to do with my campaign or with activists.”
The outgoing MP believes that his competitor “looks for incidents and creates tensions between neighborhoods in the city“.
NUPES activists were also allegedly abused when they wanted to buy water after the attack, according to Raquel Garrido and an unsubmissive activist who also posted a video on Twitter.
In the first round of the legislative elections, Raquel Garrido came out on top with NUPES and almost 38% of the vote. Jean-Christophe Lagarde, who is also boss of the UDI, came second with 33.4% of the votes cast.
