As the United States Capitol was stormed by thousands of supporters of Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, a parliamentary committee is investigating the responsibility of the former American president in this attack.
On January 6, 2021, the Capitol is violently stormed by radical rioters after the announcement of Jo Biden’s victory against Donald Trump. Since then, a parliamentary inquiry has been opened in the United States to define the responsibility of the outgoing president during these riots.
According to the commission, the assault on the Capitol qualifies as an attempted coup. “January 6 was the culmination of a coup attempt. The violence was no accident.”
“It was the last ditch effort, the desperate attempt to stop the transfer of power”explains Bennie Thompson, Chairman of the Commission of Inquiry.
On the day of the riots, William Barr, former attorney general, claims that “Donald Trump went into a monologue saying there was hard evidence of fraud involving the Dominion voting machines.”
“I was a bit demoralized, because I was like, ‘If he really believes in it, he’s lost his footing, he’s lost touch with reality'”continues the former minister.
