Irpin is “both a devastated city and a heroic city, since it was here that the Ukrainians and Ukrainians stopped the Russian army which was descending on kyiv”, said the president.
Emmanuel Macron went to Irpin, a town on the outskirts of kyiv, on Thursday June 16. The Head of State was accompanied by the President Romanian, Klaus Iohannis, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. Irpin is “both a devastated city and a heroic city, since it was here that the Ukrainians and Ukrainians stopped the Russian army which was descending on kyiv”, greeted Emmanuel Macron. But the city carries “also the traces, the stigmata of barbarism”, underlined the French president. He recalled that Irpin is located “next to other cities where massacres were perpetrated, where we have traces of what are war crimes”.
“We also support through our experts, gendarmes, magistrates who are alongside the Ukrainian authorities so that war crimes can be judged”, explained Emmanuel Macron. The Head of State affirmed that this visit by European leaders marked the “political support” from the EU to Ukraine, before a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky. “Ukraine must be able to resist and win, concluded the French president. We are at the side of Ukrainians and Ukrainians, without ambiguity.”
