Of the three semi-finals played, which marked you the most?
I would say Marseille… it was the first time for Montpellier, and at that time we had a really special squad, with very young boys, so we weren’t supposed to be there. And yet, we did. Precisely, because there was something special and unique within the group. And then it was amazing. To see this stadium, in Marseille, all in blue, in the colors of Montpellier, with all our supporters, was completely crazy!
What is your view of the current Montpellier season?
I think Montpellier had a very good season. Compared to the previous one where they struggled in the top 14, while winning the European cup. Montpellier have always been a good team. This season there have been injuries, I am thinking of Paul or Reinach, but I saw young people I knew take over. They have grown well. And it’s fantastic to see that.
Do you believe that Montpellier has a chance of going all the way?
100% ! I am convinced that Montpellier can do it, that it can go all the way. And even if people think otherwise, I believe in Montpellier. I believe they can win on Saturday, and win the final.
You remained very attached to Montpellier, didn’t you?
Montpellier will always be in my heart. Still. It’s not just a club, it’s a city and it’s people, some of them still write to me. Montpellier will always be in me, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity given to me by Montpellier.
Is not having lifted the Brennus the biggest regret of your career?
Every player wants to win trophies. But for me, even if I did not win the Top 14, I won the European challenge, I am proud to have helped young people to grow, to see that they play, that the game has evolved. I regret not having won more trophies, but I am happy to have contributed to the growth of the club.
Beyond the qualities, what is important to approach and win a semi-final?
Respect what the coach says, his instructions, obviously play the team, but also play for yourself, that is to say give the best of yourself. It’s what I’ve always been looking for. Upon returning to the field, I always put myself in the mind that I was and that I will be better than my opponent. So here it is, apply what the coach wants and then don’t forget that the supporters and the city are behind you.
Fulgence Ouedraogo and François Trinh-Duc will play their last semi-final, before retirement: what does their career inspire in you?
It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it! For me, it’s crazy to tell myself that I played with them, Fufu and François… You know, they’re not just great players. They are also great men. They have always been there for others, always helping everyone. They were always very kind and welcoming. And it’s crazy to think that they will play their last semi-final as opponents. Me, I will be behind Montpellier. I want Montpellier to win and go to the final. So I support them both, but especially Fufu.
