Pliskova, seeded fourth, eventually defeated the 21-year-old Ontarian 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7) in 2 hours and 11 minutes to reach her second quarter-finals of the year.

Wimbledon runner-up last year, Pliskova had 12 aces against Andreescu and came back from a service break in the final set.

Andreescu, the 2019 U.S. Open champion, served for the match at 5-4 in the third set.

Not having lost a single point on serve so far in the set, everything fell apart for the Canadian. Andreescu, 69e world racket, committed three unforced errors and a double fault to allow Pliskova to level the odds at 5-5.

The 30-year-old Czech then prevailed in the tiebreaker, closing the books on her third match point.

Sixth-seeded Daria Kasatknia of Russia and No. 7 American Coco Gauff won their second- and first-round matches, respectively.
