Quite the opposite of the “Voices 2022”, which ultimately opposed Canadians and Germans in Montreal, the final of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition 2022, this week, will face the Ukrainian Dmytro Choni, two Russians, a Belarusian, a Korean and an American! However, this final should not be seen as a “war” by interposed keyboards: the Russian Anna Geniushene, wife of Lukas Geniušas, left Russia for Lithuania, and her compatriot Ilya Shmukler told the New York Times feel “shame and responsibility”.
The symbolism of this final, “arbitrated” by an American and the survivor of a Korean armada, is no less strong: Van Cliburn had won the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958 in the midst of the Cold War.
