Each year in the United States, up to 1 billion birds migrating from Canada to Central America, the Caribbean, or even South America, die in the country. Brut tried to find out why.
“They are hundreds or thousands of kilometers. They come all this way just to come crashing into a window here.“Each year in the United States, nearly one billion migratory birds die because they collide with buildings.
“I had no idea the extent of the problem until I saw one of the pictures on Twitter of all the birds that had crashed into a building in one morning”explains Melissa Breyer, volunteer for the Audubon New York association.
These migratory birds would be disturbed by the reflections on the windows and the artificial lighting at night. “They have been following this trajectory in the east of the country for thousands of years. They can’t get around town. It is really up to us to learn how to welcome them better.”
With “Bird Safety Project”, volunteers scour the streets for these birds to collect data on their collisions.
