Hyundai IONIQ 5 technology: what I like and what I don’t like

If you follow the activities of the Car guideyou already know what our experts think of the 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5. A good-sized electric vehicle, with an inspiring design and an attractive price range, thanks in particular to the government subsidies for which it is eligible.

What about onboard technology? Here are the strengths and weaknesses of what is found in this electric Hyundai.

Two big screens

First, we find and we notice with pleasure a good design effort with two 12.3-inch screens placed next to each other. I love the idea since it frees up the windshield and opens up our field of vision.

However, this horizontal format offers an unusual ratio. Unfortunately, this arrangement has the effect of moving away from the icons that are at the right end of the screen. Moreover, there are up to 12 icons on the home screen. It’s way too much! The user’s mental load should be minimized, especially when driving. Fewer icons and bigger icons would make navigation much easier.

Fortunately the display is configurable according to your preferences. You can make more room for the weather or the geographical map. Also, especially the touch screen is very responsive, it responds quickly and you hardly feel any delays, which is still too often the case in the automotive industry.

Vehicle-to-Load

When we charge the battery of an electric vehicle, it is of course to allow it to drive. But with the IONIQ 5, you can also power electrical elements! Hyundai offers an adapter to reverse the current and therefore offer electricity to what you want: coffee machine, TV, lights, certain tools… but you still have to be able to get your hands on this V2L adapter (Vehicle-to-Load). This kind of tools should come standard with the purchase of the vehicle.

Fortunately, inside the vehicle, you will find a power outlet that will power fairly greedy devices. We are talking here about a 16 amp, 120 volt outlet. In my test, I managed to brown two slices of bread in a toaster and took advantage of the power to blow-dry my hair too!

With all this technology, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 puts everything in place to allow us to work or have fun during downtime. Mind you, it is still allowed to rest in our car, unhook and “unplug”. And for that, Hyundai has designed particularly comfortable relaxation seats.

Well, it’s not techno, but it’s good to pick up sometimes!
