“At present, there is little risk associated with the presence of the smoke cloud. The amount of fine particles in the air is not considered dangerous for Kangiqsualujjuamiut”, however tempers the Régie in a press release on Friday.
The fire, covering approximately 113 hectares, is raging in Parc national Kuururjuaq, 75 km east of the community. Kangiqsualujjuamiut is a village of less than 1,000 inhabitants located on the east coast of Ungava Bay, in northern Quebec.
The NRBHSS warns that some people are more vulnerable to smoke, such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses.
Symptoms of smoke exposure include irritated eyes and sinuses, mild cough, and headache. More serious symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, severe cough, dizziness, chest pain or heart palpitations are also possible.
“If you or someone you know has any of these more serious symptoms, consult your CLSC,” says the Régie.
