“Every day, we find treasures”

For 20 years, Melody TV has been delighting its subscribers with vintage music programs. The pay channel, accessible on all boxes, offers variety and pop from the 1960s to the 1990s, and even, for a short time, until the beginning of the 2000s.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, it is organizing a big gala evening at the Olympia on Wednesday June 8 with a host of artists.

“Melody TV is more of an entertainment channel, we are beyond musical since we have shows, games, movies, documentariesexplains its general manager Bruno Lécluse. More than a million and a half viewers watch us every week. And when we broadcast the channel for free, as was the case at Christmas for example, we go up to several million. We would like to go free but you have to live! Melody is quite expensive since we work a lot with archives”.

These archives are purchased from the National Audiovisual Institute (Ina) and foreign TV channels. And to the great surprise of the directors of Melody TV, unpublished material is regularly unearthed: “Our fear, at the start of the chain, was of no longer finding nuggets after 20 years“, continues Bruno Lécluse.

“We are like flea markets. Every day, we find treasures that we bring up to date.”

Champs-Elyseesshows by Maritie and Gilbert Carpentier, Noon Premiere… The nostalgic are served. They dive back into a time when variety shows had incredible audiences: “When you see the cast of artists on these shows, it’s impossible to do again today, notes Bruno Lécluse. And there was a freedom of tone that no longer exists. It’s not always good to take but it’s interesting to put it in context. Coluche, for example, would be constantly assigned today! And there is a carelessness in these shows. This is one of the reasons for the success of Melody”.
