End of mandatory mask wearing in public transport on June 18

The wearing of mandatory face coverings on public transport will end on June 18, confirmed the Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé.

Minister Dubé says he relied on a recommendation from Public Health to make this decision. “This is an important step, which confirms the significant improvement in the epidemiological situation in recent weeks,” he said in a statement.

However, wearing a face covering is still required in hospitals, CHSLDs and medical clinics. It is also recommended for vulnerable people.

Since May 14, it is no longer mandatory to wear a mask in indoor public places such as businesses, schools and daycare services.

Earlier in May, the acting national director of public health of Quebec, Dr. Luc Boileau, had justified the maintenance of the wearing of the face covering in public transport for a while, because of the difficulties in “controlling the traffic” and to maintain a distance between passengers.

Further details will follow.
