The health concerns of Queen Elizabeth II, and her absence from events of her jubilee, leave the question of the post-reign in the United Kingdom floating.
Elizabeth II is a real bedrock of the British monarchy, but the post-reign raises questions. Prince Charles called to his succession does not arouse as much enthusiasm. “We love the Queen, but Charles…I’m not sure”laughs a Briton. “I hope the monarchy will continue for a long time”, says another. The majority of Britons remain royalist, but the prince only has 50% favorable opinions, against 80% for the queen.
Graham Smith, a Republican activist, recently launched a campaign called: “Make Elizabeth II the last”. “We put up signs all over the UKhe explains. The polls will fall further when Charles takes the throne. And many under 35 want to end the monarchy. Moreover, in the former British colonies, where the sovereign is still head of state, the desire to change the regime for a republic is becoming more and more pressing.
