It is the martyr city of the conflict in Ukraine. Mariupol has now been held for several weeks by the Russians and pro-Russian separatists. Gradually, life resumed there. But the city has not finished healing its wounds.
Russia appears even in front of the symbol of the destruction of Mariupol : the bombed out theater of the city. The Russians want to give the image of a city in which life resumes. Several schools have reopened. The students are delighted to return there, after having taken refuge in cellars for weeks. Classes are no longer given in Ukrainian, but in Russian. To find bread, water or even electricity, the inhabitants gather in a square in the town centre. A giant screen broadcasts Russian channels, on which Ukraine is demonized.
What is not broadcast, on the other hand, is the second face of Mariupol. In another cemetery on the edge of town, graves are lined up as far as the eye can see. Hastily dug, they have only a simple number, which goes up to more than 3,000. A woman’s husband is buried there, in a common grave. He was 32 years old and was killed by a shell. Impossible, for the moment, to determine how many people died in Mariupol.
