Russian forces currently control “around 20%” territory of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday, June 2. This represents nearly 125,000 km2. Before the invasion, Russian or pro-Russian forces controlled 43,000 km2 there, since the annexation of Crimea and the capture of a third of Donbass in 2014. As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine enters its Day 100, Friday June 3, the offensive is still focusing on the Donbass region, more specifically on the city of Sievierodonetsk.
“We have had some successes in the battle for Sievierodonetsk”, said the Ukrainian head of state on Thursday evening. “But it’s still too early. It’s the most difficult area right now”, he added, referring to this strategic city in the east of the country in his update on the situation. He also described a similar situation in the surrounding area, particularly in Lysytchansk and Bakhmout.
Sergiï Gaïdaï, governor of the Luhansk region, spoke about the resistance of the Ukrainian forces against the Russian army on this territory: “Today we fight and hold every meter of the Luhansk region“, he said Friday morning. “And, despite all the statements of the Russians, we celebrate his birthday under the Ukrainian flag.” “For 100 days they have been destroying everything that marked the Luhansk region”, he added, saying that more than 400 km of “European standard roads” had been destroyed along with 33 hospitals, 237 rural clinics, nearly 70 schools and 50 kindergartens.
