2023 BMW X1: a complete overhaul with a more powerful engine

The BMW X1 is completely renewed for the 2023 model year, hoping to catch up with the Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 which currently dominate the small luxury utility segment.

The 2023 X1 adopts a slightly squarer silhouette, especially at the front. This is also true for the grille. The bumpers and the optical units are redesigned for a more modern and techno appearance at the same time. Moreover, the latter are part of a welcome choreography for the driver when approaching the vehicle.

Newly designed 18-inch wheels are included as standard (up to 20-inch optional, a first for the X1) and five paint colors are added to the palette including Orange Utah. For added style, an M Sport package is available.

Lower body trim lends a slightly more robust stance. By the way, the X1 gained 43mm in length, 24mm in width and 44mm in height. Its wheelbase is extended by 22 mm and its tracks are wider than before. On the other hand, the smallness of the rear window predicts still compromised visibility.

Make way for iDrive 8

Inside, BMW talks about increased shoulder and elbow room for front occupants. The rear seat folds in a convenient 40/20/40 ratio for loading.

The big new feature in the X1 2023 is the curved digital interface combining 10.25-inch instrumentation and a 10.7-inch touchscreen. It’s all powered by the eighth-generation iDrive infotainment system with intelligent voice assistant, which includes naturally spoken commands. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on the program and the system can update automatically.

The center console is now floating, leaving plenty of storage underneath. In front, it is possible to rest a phone vertically. Also notice that the gear lever is replaced by a kind of switch.

Standard ambient lighting and optional panoramic roof add light to the decor. The seats are redesigned for more comfort, while several safety devices are either improved or more advanced. On the technology side, an on-board camera allows you to monitor the interior of the X1 via the My BMW application and the navigation system benefits from augmented reality for more precision while driving.

More powerful engine

Again, the only version offered in Canada is the xDrive28i. However, its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine now generates 241 horsepower (+13) and 295 lb-ft of torque (+37). Paired with a new dual-clutch gearbox with seven gears and no longer an eight-speed automatic, it can reach 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds.

The xDrive all-wheel drive is standard, as always, but the suspension benefits from new settings that, according to BMW, improve comfort over long distances. For the first time on the X1, an adaptive M suspension is available and can lower the vehicle by 15mm as needed for better handling. It even comes with a sports direction.
