Too young to drink alcohol, but old enough to arm themselves

This paradox is not the first nor the last of an American society that has lost its bearings. Clinging to 2e amendment like a lifeline, a majority of Americans bear arms in the face of a potential enemy from within; we are far from the context of the war of independence against the English metropolis and the legitimacy of the need to carry arms.

In our southern neighbours, some states have even legalized carrying a gun on the street. This is the case of Texas where the last massacre took place in an elementary school.

Two actors are omnipresent when the time comes to pass judgment on the mass killings committed in this American society armed to the teeth. On the one hand, there is the National Rifle Association (NRA), which opposes any tightening of firearms laws.

The NRA plays an active role in lobbying politicians and in American public life in general. The other being mental illness often invoked to excuse the purchase and use of firearms by deranged individuals, reducing these dramas to a purely individual dimension, thus clearing the responsibility of these pro-gun organizations.

Very influential on the electoral level, the defenders of an armed freedom slow down the governments which wish to bring a legislative framework to restrict the use, inter alia, of the handguns responsible for many killings.

This wavering of elected officials leaves the relatives of the victims in a state of helplessness and incomprehension. If it is proven that the mental health of individuals at risk is improving, the purchase of firearms should be regulated even more, otherwise it is the apprehended disaster, as evidenced by the purchase of two different weapons by the young killer from Texas, a few days apart.

With each new mass killing, some advocate to arm themselves more while others want a deep reflection to change the climate of violence that undermines the security of citizens and creates “Son of a Gun” among the younger generations.
