Dieter had been on a stopover in the Cotentin a few days ago for a few days.
This German crisscrosses the territory on his bicycle with an 80 kilo trailer. The 67-year-old retiree left Germany two years ago and has already covered some 2,000 kilometers.
Dieter chose the freedom of the roads to discover our country and especially its coastline.
Without any real goal, this former driver who worked for twenty years in Paris, sometimes drives up to 40 kilometers per day. He stops for one or more days in makeshift camps. “I can really live free” explains Dieter.
The Cherbourg video producer Olivier le Saux met him by chance during a shoot in Cherbourg a few days ago. Dieter had set up his camp in an abandoned shed.
It’s a hell of a man who came to us to tell us about his journey, says Olivier Le Saux.
The SDF went to meet the videographer and very quickly, this German retiree agreed to confide in him.
This gives a 6 minute black and white portrait.
A cigarette in one hand and a can of beer in the other, Dieter confides in his choice of life and talks about his encounters. “People ask me why I don’t have an electric bike. So I answer, it’s very simple, I’m the engine and that’s the gasoline”. He shows his can of beer in his hand.
Sometimes, the homeless person stays in shelters when the weather conditions are too difficult or he needs to take a shower.
Dieter intends to descend to the Basque Country then take the direction of Montpellier. And no matter how long it takes. “I love my freedom. It’s like that”, concludes the German SDF in this report.
