At a press conference on Saturday, the Mayor of Gatineau, France Bélisle, recommended that residents who have installed sandbags to protect their homes leave them in place, but she indicated that there was no need to add more.
She specified that the City remains in “monitoring” mode and that it was not necessary to switch to alert mode.
“In the context, asking local residents to maintain their dikes and not remove them seems reasonable and responsible to me,” explained Ms.me Belisle.
According to the mayoress, the rain that fell during the night from Friday to Saturday raised the level of the river, without however the situation becoming more alarming, the decline being expected quickly.
Mme Bélisle also announced that financial assistance from the Department of Public Security will be offered to citizens who have had to take preventive measures in certain sectors.
“I invite citizens to keep their bills safe,” recalled the mayor.
A procedure for the collection of sandbags will be put in place towards the end of next week.
Elsewhere in Quebec, other waterways were also under surveillance on Saturday. At the end of the day, the Saint-François River went to a medium flood watch level downstream of the Aylmer dam.
The Cascapedia River and the Famine River also presented minor flood risks.
