From pasta to oils to flour, the prices of many basic necessities continue to rise. The situation is increasingly complicated for food banks, due to the growing number of beneficiaries. Report in Franche-Comté.
In Chalezeule (Doubs), 237 families are expected at the Restos du Cœur on Saturday May 28. They will come to fill their basket with basic necessities. The center receives almost 100 more families than in 2021, at the same time. “We have more families calling or coming in, saying, ‘I have nothing left to eat.’ And there, we still see a certain increase compared to recent years “explains Bernard Preux, head of Restos du Heart of Chalezeule (Doubs).
Volunteers are also seeing a new phenomenon of over-indebtedness. The restaurants of Heart rely on Food Bank stocks. Here inflation does not fnot feel yet, but the future is uncertain. “We have experience of crises, but this one still seems quite serious to us, and we have no vision at all (…) of what will happen in six months”, notes Michel Jeannin, communication officer of the Food Bank of Franche-Comté. Associations rely more than ever on donations.
