Since his first EP Drug Music published in the spring of 2021 at Gone Girl, R&B singer-songwriter Majaii Kayla Merlin has taken a gigantic leap. His first songs revealed his supple, but almost shy voice, unfolding on classic rhythms for the genre. Teaming up again with composer and producer Funkywhat, the Montrealer is having a blast today on seven new songs that are aesthetically more daring. Magi comes out of her shell as soon as the slinger Milkweedin the opening, even daring the rap flow at the heart of this funk-soul refrain with rubbery basses, then on Free Grillz. Delivered at Pissed Black Girlshe revises her R&B like a pancake to move on to a house rhythm, even more insisting on the next one Children of Fate, extremely effective. In conclusion, No Ego directs the musician to a nasty and heady pop. We’ll be running to see her everywhere this summer on stages across the province, including at the Festival international de jazz de Montréal on July 8 and on July 16 at the Festival d’été de Québec.
