Several family members made the announcement on social media.
“It is with extreme sadness that I announce that my Aunt Irma’s husband, Joe Garcia, has died of grief. I have no words to tell you how we feel. Pray for our family. God does not spare us, it is not easy,” wrote their nephew, John Martinez, on Twitter.
A cousin, Debra Austin, also shared the news on the GoFundMe page open for family.
“I think Joe was truly heartbroken to lose the love of his life. It was too much to bear,” she said.
Irma Garcia was one of the teachers in the Grade 4 class targeted by the shooter. She would have died trying to protect her students.
In her description on the Uvalde region school board website, Ms. Garcia said she had been married for 24 years and had four children.
Among her hobbies, she indicated that she enjoyed spending evenings with the family around the BBQ or taking small cruises in the region.
