Legal aid lawyers on strike for half a day on Tuesday

Unions of legal aid lawyers affiliated with the CSN will be on strike for half a day on Tuesday in several regions of Quebec.

The walkout is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the regions of Montreal, Laval, Lanaudière, Laurentides, Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie.

The striking lawyers planned several picket lines in front of the legal aid offices, before demonstrating in front of the courts, according to a press release from the CSN.

In Montreal, a picket will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Place Dupuis and will be followed at noon by a demonstration by lawyers in front of the courthouse on Notre-Dame Street East.

Without a collective agreement for more than two years, legal aid lawyers are demanding equal pay conditions with prosecutors who are paid more by Quebec.

Thus they denounce the refusal of the Treasury Board to “agree on negotiation mandates to maintain pay parity with Crown prosecutors employed by Quebec”.
