The St. John Sea Dogs showed the door to their head coach Gordie Dwyer on Sunday. A decision that raises several questions, given that the team will participate in the Memorial Cup in less than a month.

The Sea Dogs have an automatic ticket to the Memorial Cup, since the city of St. John will host the prestigious tournament which will take off on June 20.
The reasons for the dismissal have not yet been disclosed. However, the team had had a good season, finishing third overall in the QMJHL standings. The team had posted a record of 47 wins, 17 losses and four overtime wins.
Dwyer’s squad lost in the first round of the playoffs in five games to the Rimouski Oceanic. Prior to losing this series, the Sea Dogs were on a 15-game winning streak, in addition to winning 26 of the final 28 games of the season.
Dwyer, 44 and former captain of the Quebec Remparts, was in his first season behind the Sea Dogs bench. Previously, he was the head coach of the Charlottetown Islanders and the Shawinigan Cataractes in the Courteau circuit.
