Omar Sy answers Augustin Trapenard’s questions on the occasion of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. He talks about the film “Tirailleurs”, of which he is co-producer, and his own story.

Omar Sy is currently at the Cannes Film Festival to present “Tirailleurs”, a film he co-produced alongside Mathieu Vadepied and in which he plays.

“Skirmishers” retraces the story of 200,000 Senegalese skirmishers and particularly that of a father and his son, sent to fight in France during the First World War.

More than a third of them were killed. “This story has never really been told in the cinema” explains Augustin Trapenard.

Throughout the film, Omar Sy speaks Fulani: “Fulani is my story, it’s the language of my parents. I was brought up through that language”.

It is also a piece of French history. We don’t have the same memory, but we have the same history. Yours, mine, complement each other to make history”, explains the actor.

Today, we must remember them and put them in their place as heroes. It is a work that complements that of historians”, concludes Omar Sy.
