Already the fastest in the three free practice sessions in Barcelona, Charles Leclerc had a very good qualifying session on Saturday May 21 and will start from pole position in the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday, for the fourth time in six races. . The world championship leader leads Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who suffered an engine problem in his last attempt, and his teammate Carlos Sainz.

If the Ferrari and Red Bull drivers, who occupy the first three places, were smiling at the end of qualifying, Q3 was nevertheless eventful for the two teams. Having made a mistake in his first attempt, Charles Leclerc therefore only benefited from a complete attempt, perfectly carried out, to take pole position. Behind him, Max Verstappen’s single-seater experienced a new engine problem, at the worst time, during the Dutchman’s last attempt, who was therefore unable to improve his time and had to settle for second place.

The pair are ahead of Carlos Sainz, who will start from the second row alongside Briton George Russell, whose Mercedes has made progress at Barcelona. The manufacturer’s world champion team has made improvements to its single-seaters, in terms of grip, which has allowed the Silver Arrows to bounce less and benefit from a better top speed. Russell once again finished ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton in qualifying, as the seven-time world champion will start from 6th place.

On the French side, Esteban Ocon will start from 12th position, two places ahead of Pierre Gasly, whose car was unable to do better, when its engine broke during free practice on Friday.
