What is this evil that strikes the sugar cane harvesters in the region of Beed, India? Many of them experience stomach aches and undergo, to put an end to it, the removal of the uterus and ovaries. Not only do their pains not stop, but they then suffer from premature menopause. Their ordeal only gets worse.
Here, 36% of female agricultural workers no longer have a uterus, i.e. around 100,000 women, while the average in India and in the world is 3%. Are these women abusively sterilized? What role do doctors play?
Environmental pollution in question
Most of them would have developed fibroids or endometriosis, causing them severe pain. Could these pathologies be due to exposure to heavy metals? Could there be a link with environmental pollution and the use, in Indian agriculture, of pesticides and agricultural fertilizers? “Special Envoy” investigated.
