This is a record that EDF would have done well without. 28 nuclear reactors are shut down. In most cases, this involves scheduled maintenance on the reactors or inspection visits which take place every ten years. But EDF is also faced with a major problem of corrosion of its pipes, essential to the safety of a power station. “We discovered scratches in the steel on the safety injection pipes”says Ludovic Dupin, spokesman for the French nuclear energy company.

Five reactors were stopped for work, seven others will undergo checks. Electricity production may decrease and increase the bill this winter. “They will be felt later on consumer bills, mainly from the beginning of 2023”says Nicolas Goldberg, expert energy.
