It’s a small revolution for first aid. A decree now authorizes firefighters to practice emergency care, reserved until now to doctors. Valuable skills, especially in medical deserts.
Emergency call Monday, May 16 in the afternoon for the firefighters of Pas-de-Calais. It is a life assistant who has just called the fire brigade. In a house, a 57-year-old man with a medical history struggles to breathe. Until now, firefighters had to wait for a team of doctors to arrive for a number of medical acts.
But since the publication of a decree, they are authorized to test a patient’s oxygen saturation themselves, or to take their blood pressure, in conjunction with a doctor. New tools that allow thus to firefighters to know more about the victim, and which also reassure caregivers. Firefighters are also authorized to perform an electrocardiogram or to perform a blood sugar test. These new attributions do not always please, especially emergency doctors. Helping people represents 90% of the total activity of firefighters.
