It’s summer before its time. After the storms this weekend, the good weather is back everywhere in France and the mercury will start to rise again. Météo France predicts temperatures that will reach 30 to 34°C in the middle of the week.
Wednesday and Thursday, or even Friday, a heat episode will affect most regions, “with the exception of regions close to the English Channel and the Mediterranean coast”.
Is it remarkable for a mid-May?
In its bulletin, Météo France explains that this episode of heat is “exceptional for its precocity, its durability and its geographical extent”. According to meteorologists, “many heat records for the month of May could be exceeded” especially in the north and south-west.
In some cities like Lyon, the mercury could exceed 30°C for at least five consecutive dayswhich is “extremely rare” for a month of May: the phenomenon was observed only once in a century, in 1945. In Montélimar, the series at more than 30°C could even reach six or seven days in a row.
According to Météo France, it is therefore “highly probable”, “in view of the trends”that the month of May 2022 dethrones the previous hottest month of MayMay 2011.
