The May 9, 2022 sale is a record sale in the 20th century art market. The famous portrait of Marilyn Monroe, painted by Andy Warhol, has been sold for 195 million dollars in New York. Entitled Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, the famous portrait, made in 1964, was sold in just 4 minutes by the Christie’s auction house.
This record allows the painting to enter the list of the ten most expensive works in history, a very closed club bringing together Picasso, Monet and Bacon in particular. The classification does not take into account private sales where the amounts are rarely communicated.
