Dal Lake, located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Indian Kashmir, is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Tens of thousands of people live on its shores, and tourists come to stay in old boats turned into hotels.

Nestled at the foothills of the Himalayas, Dal Lake, 1,700m above sea level, rests glistening and majestic in the heart of Indian Kashmir. A natural jewel, where women and men have taken up residence. Dal Lake is in fact inhabited by 50,000 people. In the mid-19th century, British settlers, who were prohibited from owning land in Kashmir, made their quarters on boats converted into homes floating. After independence, they were all transformed into hotels. In the 1960s, stars flocked there, like the guitarist of the Beatles, george Harrison.

There are fewer visitors today. The region, one of the most militarized in the world, is regularly the scene of tensions between the Indian army and the local Muslim population. Nevertheless, each morning, the lake becomes a floating vegetable market, one of the largest in Asia.
