Camille Laurin the separatist | The duty

Dear Simon Jolin-Barrette or Minister, if you prefer. It is very good, your letter in The duty of May 6, which pays a highly deserved tribute to this great Quebecer who was Camille Laurin. What you say about his role in our history is correct. However, it seems to me that you are forgetting a small detail in your overview of his work: it is that Camille Laurin was a convinced separatist. The Charter of the French language was for him a first and fundamental step in the process of Quebec towards its essential independence. It so happens, Mr. Jolin-Barrette, that you were elected under the banner of a party that promised to bury Quebec’s independence project as hollow as possible. As such, you are anti-Camille Laurin. It is your right, but it would be fair if you mentioned it, which of course would prevent you from claiming to be his successor in any way. We can see it clearly these days, Bill 101, without independence, cannot do much against the folklorization of Quebec. No matter how much you state your inclination to save her, without independence, by the fundamental choice you make, she will die of starvation in your arms. I end by deploring that this text was co-signed by a few notorious separatists.
