Next summer will be very dry everywhere in France, where the water tables are at historically low levels. Why is the situation deteriorating from year to year?
In two-thirds of France, water is scarce as the first heats await. Last winter, it barely rained, so groundwater could not recharge. A critical situation and historically low levels for the season. These aquifers are supposed to feed the rivers when there is no more rain during the summer.
“At the next heat wave or the next heat wave, we will find ourselves directly confronted with forms of flash drought”, explains Emma Haziza, hydrologist. Since last January, there has been a 35% rainfall deficit and even 80% in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. “We had far too many highs and therefore far too much calm weather this winter and not enough disturbances in the country”explains the weather journalist, Chloé Nabédian.
